STEAM Centre at Bentleigh Secondary College officially openedThe new Da Vinci Centre at Bentleigh Secondary College was officially opened today by The Hon Nick Staikos MP, Member for Bentleigh. Home to science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), the new centre was opened in the presence of students, school council, schools leaders past and present, and the project team including Haskell Architects, Debtech and SJ Higgins. .​

The new Da Vinci Centre is home to science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM). The centre has facilities for middle and senior students, including purpose-designed visual art studios, specialist food and materials technology, classrooms, courtyards and a gallery. ​The project also features construction of a new basketball stadium with a new competition-grade two courts, demolishing existing buildings, relocating relocatable buildings, constructing a new car park and landscaping.​

New Performing Arts Centre at Huntingtower School officially opened. Last Friday we attended the official opening ceremony of the new Performing Arts Centre at Huntingtower School.

 

Huntingtower Principal, Mr Sholto Bowen OAM, was joined by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, The Honourable Julie Bishop MP and local Member Julia Banks MP to unveil the plaque. Other guests included the project team including Baldasso Cortese Architects, School Board, students, parents and recipients of the Chisholm Volunteer Awards.

 

The project comprised construction of a 750 -seat Performing Arts Centre with associated facilities such as wings, loading dock, green room, change facilities, foyers and links to existing drama and VCE centre.

Premier Daniel Andrews visits Bentleigh Secondary College

Premier of Victoria The Hon Daniel Andrews visited Bentleigh Secondary College last week to see the progress of the major upgrade project.

DHHS Preston- Public Tenant Employment Program

SJ Higgins is proud to participate in the Victorian Government's Public Tenant Employment Program (PTEP) which provides opportunities for public housing tenants to gain skills and hands-on experience to find sustainable employment.

 

The Preston renewal project, currently in construction, incorporates employment opportunities for residents and the local communities, such as the PTEP which aims to help social housing residents across Victoria gain hands on experience and training, and create pathways to meaningful employment. Stage 1 of the project will deliver 1 and 2 bedroom homes that will be energy efficient, achieving a high thermal rating and will include rainwater harvesting and photovoltaic cells. The building in Stokes Street will be three storeys, while those in Penola Street will be four storeys.

 

"We appreciate the opportunity to give young, who live in social housing, training and support that can provide them with a prospect for future employment. This project is a great example of building a community and individuals' lives and we are pleased to be part of this initiative. " says Ken de Souza, Construction Manager at SJ Higgins.

New project: Sambell Lodge Redevelopment The Brotherhood of St Laurence has appointed SJ Higgins to redevelop the existing Sambell Lodge Residential Aged Care in Clifton Hill.

 

The redevelopment project will provide a high quality Aged Care for the benefit of people who are socially and financially disadvantaged, homeless or at risk of homelessness. Scope of works comprise construction of a four storey residential aged care facility to incorporate 114 beds and a basement carpark as well as courtyards at ground level and associated landscaping.

 

The new building has been designed to take into account the character of the neighbourhood and includes generous setbacks from the adjoining properties and a comprehensive landscape plan.

Official opening ceremony of Samarinda Residential Aged Care The redeveloped Samarinda Residential Aged Care was formally opened following a smoke ceremony performed by the Wurundjeri, the original custodians of the land.

 

The official opening was attended by SJ Higgins representatives, RH Design, Samarinda Aged Care Services Board, local member Kelly O'Dwyer MP and Graham Watt MP, Member for Burwood.

 

The project was a major redevelopment to extend the existing residential aged care facility to a total of 92 single rooms with ensuites. The construction process comprised 5 stages to ensure minimal disruption to the ongoing operation of the aged care facility.

 

Stage 1 was successfully handed over in July 2015. This first stage included lounge area, 14 state of the art bedrooms with ensuites as well as a full upgrade of the kitchen.

Work starts on new Wonthaggi Secondary College The Minister for Education, The Hon James Merlino has turned the sod on the $32.5 million project at Wonthaggi Secondary College yesterday, marking the official start of construction.

 

Designed by ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, the new senior campus with world-class facilities will be located on a site next to the Bass Coast Specialist School. The new campus will be purpose-built for adolescent and adult learning and facilitate strong connections to the local community.

 

The design includes a two-storey Administration and Learning Building and Games Hall, linked by landscaped outdoor social and recreation areas. The Administration and Learning Building will include general learning areas, as well as administration facilities, library resources area and specialist facilities for Visual Arts, Graphics, Materials Technology and Science. The new school will feature a multi-sport stadium that will be shared with the community, including three competition-grade basketball courts.

Minister for Education visits Melba College Minister for Education, The Hon James Merlino visited Melba College in Croydon on Friday to announce the school will get $11.05 Million in the Victorian Budget 2018/19 to go towards Stage 2 of its rebuild, including a new basketball stadium and cutting-edge STEAM building.

 

SJ Higgins is the Head Contractor for Stage 1, which comprises construction of three 2-storey school buildings including the Junior Village, Administration, Global Learning and Food Technology Building and the Senior Village. Melba College was formed in 2012 through the merger of Croydon and Maroondah Secondary Colleges.

Hands Across The Water 2018

SJ Higgins VIC has proudly supported Amy Fitzpatrick from ClarkeHopkinsClarke in this year's Hands Across The Water 800km charity bike ride across Thailand.

 

Congratulations to Amy, for not only reaching, but exceeding her fundraising goal. Well done!

 

The Hands Group is an Australian, New Zealand and Thai social enterprise that gives at-risk Thai children and their communities a helping hand through their charity Hands Across. Hands Across The Water is currently the biggest Australian and New Zealand charity operating in Thailand. Our projects are tailored to meet local communities’ needs – for the long term. Sod turned at Port Melbourne Primary School

The sod has been turned at Port Melbourne Primary School today marking the official beginning to construction works of a $5.4 Million upgrade to the existing school.

 

Acting Premier, the Hon James Merlino and Member for Albert Park the Hon Martin Foley today visited the school and turned the first sod of the upgrade. Designed by Williams Boag, the upgrade includes a new multi-purpose gymnasium, with indoor basketball and netball courts, change rooms, toilets and canteen and an arts and music building offering a diverse range of arts and inclusive programs at the school. State-of-the-art facilities include acoustic wall lining and double-glazing of the event and performance spaces.

The Minister for Housing, The Hon. Martin Foley MP visits Preston Renewal Project

The Minister for Housing The Hon. Martin Foley MP visited today our project at Stokes Street and Penola Streets in Preston alongside key guests from various organisations including Annette Parker, Assistant Director, Property and Project Management Unit and Daryl Glynn, Assistant Area Director.

 

Other guests included the design team from blp, David Leece, Director, Emily Gilfillan, Associate Director. SJ Higgins representatives included Carl Scavo, Director, David Millmow, Site Manager and Mersi Halilovic, Business Development Executive.

 

This project is part of a $2.7 billion Homes for Victorians initiative to address housing and homelessness.

 

The first stage of the renewal will see 68 social housing units constructed on long-vacant land in Stokes Street and Penola Street. The initial redevelopment will provide a 10 per cent increase on the public housing previously provided on the two streets, where original homes built in the early 1940s were demolished between 2008 and 2012.

SJ Higgins to build new Balwyn Tennis and Community Facility SJ Higgins VIC has been awarded the contract to build the new Balwyn Tennis and Community Facility.

 

The former Balwyn Bowls Club Pavilion and bowling greens will be demolished to make way for a new Tennis and Community Facility. Designed by mgs architects, the proposed development will include a double storey building comprising a tennis club with tennis courts and ancillary elements, multipurpose community spaces, kitchen, bathrooms and a terrace.

SJ Higgins appointed as Head Contractor for new HammondCare Dementia Village We are pleased to advise that we have been appointed as Design & Construct Head Contractor for HammondCare's new dementia village in Caulfield.

The development will see the creation of a $25 Million dementia village comprising six cottages and 81 individual rooms. Each cottage will have between 9 and 15 private bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a centralised domestic kitchen for the preparation of fresh meals and a variety of domestic and familiar living areas. A new basement carpark with 75 spaces, ambulance parking, maintenance, plant and miscellaneous area will also be constructed.

Beaumaris Sports Club delivered Our VIC team has handed over the new Beaumaris Sports Club building, with external works still underway.

 

Situated at Banksia Reserve, the new Beaumaris Sports Club is a hub for entertainment, socialising and all things sport.

 

Members can enjoy a relaxed dining experience in the a la carte bistro & sports bar, a dedicated Members' bar & lounge and a versatile functions space. The new facilities are the proud home to three elite sporting clubs. The Beaumaris Football Club, Lawn Tennis Club and Cricket Club.

New project: Morningside Childcare centre SJ Higgins have recently been awarded the Design and Construction contract for a new Early Learning Centre in Morningside, Queensland.

 

The full turn-key development includes a 20 car basement, and two accompanying levels to accommodate up to 101 children. Boasting six separate childcare rooms with shared amenities, kitchen, laundry, prep rooms, staff rooms, staff amenities, storage areas and a sleep room for the younger children. The construction of the new centre is scheduled to commence in April 2018.
