Overview

Creating a vibrant sporting destination for Melbourne’s growing west.

Higgins proudly partnered with Melton City Council to deliver the Bridge Road Community Hub, transforming a greenfield site in Strathtulloh into a modern sporting and recreation precinct as part of the Bridge Road Active Open Space Masterplan. Designed to support one of Melbourne's fastest-growing communities, the new facility provides quality spaces for local sporting clubs, families and residents to connect, participate and thrive.

Delivered under a Construct Only contract, the project included a new multi-use sports pavilion, an AFL/AFLW-standard football oval with integrated cricket pitch, dedicated netball courts, enclosed cricket practice nets, expanded car parking, landscaped public spaces and supporting civil infrastructure.

The completed facility features:

  • Multi-use sports pavilion with AFL/cricket and netball change facilities
  • AFL/AFLW-standard football oval with integrated cricket pitch
  • Dedicated netball court
  • Two enclosed cricket practice nets
  • 58 additional car parking spaces
  • Landscaped open spaces, pathways and picnic facilities
  • Associated lighting, fencing, irrigation and site infrastructure

Accelerating delivery through smarter programme management

Originally programmed across three separate construction stages, Higgins identified an opportunity to significantly improve programme efficiency by resequencing the works into one concurrent delivery strategy. By running all separable portions simultaneously, increasing on-site resources and carefully coordinating construction activities, our team achieved practical completion 85 working days ahead of programme, enabling the community to access the new facilities months earlier than anticipated.

A key priority throughout delivery was establishing the AFL playing surface before the winter dormancy period. Early completion of the oval allowed turf establishment to occur under optimal growing conditions, protecting both programme certainty and the long-term performance of the sporting facilities.

During construction, the project also encountered unforeseen contaminated soil. Higgins implemented an innovative on-site stockpiling strategy, allowing works to continue uninterrupted while Melton City Council completed additional testing and successfully reclassified the material, significantly reducing disposal costs for the client.

Strengthening community connections through sport

Bridge Road Community Hub provides the growing Strathtulloh community with a modern recreational destination that encourages active lifestyles, social connection and community participation.

The upgraded facilities create new opportunities for local sporting clubs, while the additional infrastructure, landscaping and public open spaces deliver lasting social and economic benefits for residents and future generations. Sustainable initiatives, including a 5kW solar PV system and recycled water infrastructure supporting oval irrigation, further enhance the long-term value of the precinct.
